A Whiplash by Austrian’s Weather Changes

Alright – given the fact that today is November the 19th, it may not be the right time to wonder about cold weather conditions. Nevertheless I find myself slightly displeased when leaving the house in the early morning. Then again, I remind myself of being thankful for the last few months of warming sunshine.

However – wrapped into my coat and protected by my cap and gloves – I came to think about the lovely memories of my summer visit to the southern neighbour. In addition, the thought awakened a strong feeling of guilt for never running over the photos I’ve taken back then.

So here they are – bright, warm and colorful as the summer itself.

Best possible Conditions…

Looking forward to another weekend of warming sunshine and mountain beauty, two highly motivated people started to hike and climb – up and down. A few hours and one summit later, we had earned ourselves the view into the next valley, filled with green landscapes and blue mountain lakes. It was then, when we agreed to meet our third fellow at the desired destination of day 1 – the Sulzenauhütte.

At sunset we finally arrived. And after one bracing dinner plus a shandy we happily went to unpack our sleeping bags. Then again, I found myself in a room filled with only men… any concerns there? Never mind – feeling pretty surrounded but also sheltered by the male population I closed my eyes and enjoyed the absence of city noise.

Way before sunset, the morning light confirmed the sound of clattering rain, but nonetheless we decided to battle our way up to the summit – trough fog, rain and and freezing wind.

The last hours of clambering we experienced cold toes, frozen fingers and whole-body shivering – until we finally reached the cross on the summit – at best conditions (be aware – sarcasm!): the storm was even heavier and the sight reached as far as 2 whole meters – yeeey.

To come to a conclusion: our fellowship and the upkeeping of good mood in any possible circumstances were quite unbelievable.

A Lack of Sleep at Sunrise

It was a saturday morning, when my friend and I went on the great quest of searching for sleep. After a long night of only a few hours of resting we started right into the first day – nearly 8 hours of hiking.

We collected our first small summit – the Gamskogel – around lunchtime and allowed ourselves an extensive lunch break – looking forward to 15km of hiking into the next valley and our desired sleeping place: the Franz Senn Hütte.

As Franz Senn was the founder of the german alpine association, we figured that the hut would be very small, cosy and remote. Thus… we spent the following night – a further time of lacking sleep – between a huge group of british scouts, a crowd of italians and – oh wonder, oh wonder – an uncountable number of german folks.

Hunted by this crush of people, we preferred flashlights over sleep and reached the summit at 6 o’clock in the morning. Some pictures later, I caringly repacked my 7D and wrapped my sleepingbag around the two of us. The warming sun indeed granted us a whole hour of sleep right beneath the cross of the summit – jealous, hm?

Way too many hours later I found myself at home – happy, tired and ready to sleep.

Make your feet your friend!

Summer has finally come (and gone, and come, and gone… uhm, nevermind) and once more, it was the right time to visit another mountain peak.

As soon as we got the go-ahead from the weather report, me and a fellow scout leader started our little tour. Fully motivated to set up a tent at 2000m height, where not even the slightest piece of ground is horizontal, we were held up by a serious crowd of billy goats.

But as they say – “a scout smiles and whistles under all circumstances” – and after a night of heavy rain and spaghetti carbonara for breakfast we reached the summit far later then planned.

Altogether it was another nice trip to another nice mountain… including of course: another grand sunburn.

“Nostalgia is a seductive Liar”… true?

… somewhere deep in the forest of my memory I found my way back to a mountain lodge, which I haven’t seen for quite some time – the Meissnerhaus.

Indeed, the environment is as beautiful as I have remembered it for many years. Anyway, we also decided to scale the Viggarspitze, a close mountain peak. Unfortunately, all the way up to the summit, there was a dense fog wrapped around us – too bad for my camera.

Nevertheless, it was another day of happy hiking – weather or not we didn’t get the chance to enjoy a 360°-view from the summit.
